Healthy birds maintain their weight. If a bird becomes weak from ilÍlness, it loses weight, but you cannot tell by looking at the bird because they continue to be able to perch and appear to be normal until they are in a very weakened state. If you do not determine from weight loss that the bird is ill, they will eventually be unable to stand on a perch. If you find a bird standing on the bottom of the cage unable to perch -- you have only a few hours to get them to a vet. If you weigh your bird weekly, you can determine that they continue to be well -- or if they need special attention long before it becomes a crisis.
